The side that had such an exceptional season last year had made the large leap from taking out Division 3 straight into Division 1 to play against the best Christian clubs in South East Queensland. It was a very tough day at the office. The team knew they were going to have to dig deep and play at their best for the full 60 min. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long to breach our defence with Logan scoring at the 5’mark to take the lead 1 nil. We countered quickly with Jonas taking out first shot but it went wide of the goal. At 11’, Logan again put the ball past our keeper to move to 2 nil. At the 18’mark, in an effort to stop Logan scoring, one of our defenders brought down a Logan player in the box and the ref pointed to the spot. With plenty of encouragement, Buster stood on the line, ready for the shot. With a diving save to his right, Buster stopped the shot but it rebounded back out of reach with the Logan striker trailing through to put the ball home. Logan have now moved the 3 nil. Blackstone kept their heads up and continued to compete on equal footing with their counter parts. With shots by Scott, Jonas (saved by the keeper) and Dan (aiming for the bottom right corner, the ball just went wide of the post), Blackstone pushed hard to open their score sheet. With a minute left on the clock, Logan scored a scrappy goal off a corner with Blackstone failing to clear the ball. At halftime, Logan were leading 4 nil.
It would have been easy for Blackstone to throw in the towel but to the teams credit, they never dropped their heads and with the coach giving plenty of encouragement, the second half started. It didn’t take long for our first opportunity with a through ball for Dan at the 32’mark. Dan was able to outpace Logan’s defence and slotted it past the keeper for Blackstone’s opening goal. The score is back to 4-1 in Logan’s favour. as the match went on, Blackstone struggled to keep our shape in the midfield and defend corners and Logan scored again at the 34’, 35’, 40’and 49’ to move to an 8-1 lead. Blackstone did not stop trying and showed great fortitude despite the score line. At the 54’mark, a lovely passing movement went up through our midfield to Jonas who put a ball through to Dan clear of the defence. With a cracking shot that the keeper just saved, Jonas was on the spot to clean up the loose ball and claim his first goal for the season. Score back to 8-2. Logan was able to score one more time just short of full time.
The coach was very happy with the way Blackstone played and proud of the effort displayed. Particular mention goes to Theo who has moved into the role of attacking centre mid and Ben on his first game of club soccer (very dangerous on the right wing). Both had very good games.
