Here We Go! Here We Go! Here We GOOOOOOOOO!
It’s been a long time coming and all the supporters were emphatic about the solid win today by the Dragons!
We played as a TEAM! We won as a TEAM! We celebrate as a TEAM! Also, you can’t spell TEAM without MAT. But I digress.
It was a great atmosphere created by all-comers in the grandstands & the players & I were very appreciative. Thanks!
Eventually winning 5-0, I got the shock of my short & humble coaching career (I still have to have a full time job though – I thought volunteer meant something else, he he. But again I digress) when we took a 1-nil lead after 6 minutes. Then 2-nil. And then 3-nil by half time!
My voice was hoarse at full time, but not from barking so many orders – more so from praising & encouraging the players. WOO-HOO!
I could tell after the second goal that the Dragons were switched ON today. Every single player did their job & deserved the coaches award today – I’m serious. However, Jayden T(14) was awarded Emrys the Dragon for his never quit attitude, lots of running, couple of good goal opportunities & good training effort on Thursday. Keep it up JT14, that elusive goal beckons!
It was a hard choice & I apologize to the other 12 players. Next time maybe. I want to award it to all of you once this year, so keep the effort at this level & keep wanting to improve – both at training & game day.
Westminster are a well-structured team, but today we got in behind their midfield & won the contested ball more than them. We didn’t look like giving away a goal today but looked like we could score 10. Next time? Big Ups to our defence today! A clean sheet is as good as scoring three goals. With the defenders led again by Harrison D(4) – Corey S(12), Jakob H(15), Jack V(9), Jaxon P-C(2) & Che B-L(11) did a mighty job & in unison reinforced the Iron Wall of Blackstone. As mentioned earlier, all players were excellent, but honourable acknowledgement to Lucas B(7) & James L(3) – our super strikers. Two goals each today spurred the team to victory & got the Blackstone faithful chanting & excited.
JL3 scrapped for the ball all game & that’s how his two goals were scored – good tough scrappy efforts getting the ball through the Westminster players & tucking the ball past the goalie. Coaches like these types of goals. High Five!
LB7 showed his full potential with two equally impressive strikes. The first was contender for goal of the year. With nothing happening on halfway, he weaved the ball through the Green Shirts back players, sprinted towards the goals & calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. My expectations were well & truly exceeded. The second was a similar effort & we all watched in awe as the lead was increased. Westminster were shell-shocked.
JH15 did well in the first half as keeper with some mighty saves & a good boot of the ball up the field. His second half penalty/free kick goal was a super strike too hot to handle by the Green Shirts goalie. From the edge of the 18 yard box the ball hit the keeper high on the shoulder & its power made it ricochet off his head & into the net.
Lachlan F(5) had his best game to date with some good running, stymieing Westminster raids with good tackling & getting up in attack when needed. Use all your energy during the game – not at half time & at full time, he he. Keep up the great effort Little L.
CBL11 was again reliable in the midfield/defence today & stepped up to play keeper in the second. Hope you didn’t catch cold standing there doing nothing in goals buddy – he he (because the defenders were so good!). Next week I want a goal from you – you are overdue.
CS12 was steadfast again with some nice touches & scrapping for the ball. You must be saving your fast pace for next game. At training you smash the ball like a bullet so bring that to the game & you will see the benefits.
Corbin L(13) was the wanderer on the field today – he was everywhere but just couldn’t get into space & charge forward for a much deserved goal. He propped up the midfield again & if he shows his training form during the match he will be the best player!
JV9 tried hard & got involved & ran down some of the Westminster attackers & denied them quality ball. Keep it up JV9 – your game is getting better. Bolstering both the defence & the attack is what the team needs from you & you’re doing well.
Kenny K(8) is the soul of the team & tries hard every game. You put yourself in good positions today KK8 but if you hustled harder for the ball you would have had a chance to score a goal. Next week you will be a striker so get your running boots on.
Mack T(6) also had his best game of the season so far. He rolled his sleeves up & tried his best to get the ball & pass it to a player in a better position. I got excited a couple of times when he had possession in attack in the opposition 18 yard box but he just couldn’t strike the ball hard enough – or straight enough for a goal. Keep trying hard son & don’t worry about getting hurt. You have the whole week to recover.
HD4 again was stoic as the main defender & he did a great job. Easily could win the coaches award nearly every week. Showed he was tough at training by getting struck hard with all the practice balls during a soccer drill & didn’t wince once.
JPC2 had a quiet game by his standards. He was involved in a few attacking raids & good defence but turned the ball over to the Green Shirts a couple of times after some epic dribbling efforts came to an end. If you can link up with another Red Shirt with a reliable one-two play, you will get another goal soon.
Great Game Boys. Be proud of the effort & it looks like we have found the formula to be a challenging team to play for the rest of the season.
HARD WORK beats talent when talent doesn’t WORK HARD.
As stated at the end of the match after we won today, I will get all players & coaching staff McDonald’s after next week’s game whether we win/lose/draw to celebrate not only today’s great result but for putting in a bigger effort & making me feel younger & one of the lads. Remember, WINNERS aren’t always the players that get first place.
Have a good week & I’ll see you all next home game as I’m away up north on business.
Cheers, Coach Mat
ps No moths or butterflies were harmed during today’s game.
